Ever wondered if your cat experiences periods like humans? The short answer is yes, but it's a bit different! Technically, female cats, also known as queens, experience an estrous cycle, often called 'heat'. Unlike human menstruation, cats don't shed a uterine lining that results in noticeable bleeding.
Instead, 'heat' signifies a cat is fertile and receptive to mating. This cycle can last for several days to weeks and occur multiple times a year, especially during warmer months. You might observe behavioral changes like increased vocalization (meowing), restlessness, and a tendency to rub against objects or people. Some cats may also spray urine.
If you're not planning on breeding your cat, spaying is highly recommended. Spaying eliminates the heat cycle and its associated behaviors, and also prevents unwanted pregnancies and reduces the risk of certain health problems. Talk to your veterinarian about the best time to spay your feline companion.
